Tips from the team at Detroit Sponge about hiring a new team member for your business.

Congratulations if your business has positioned itself with the ability to hire on new help to assist in the continual growth of your ever-expanding customer list!

    JOB CLARITY

It’s highly recommended to start off by giving all prospected new employees a layout of what your company’s core values. It’s important that every future and current employee has a clear understanding of what is expected of them to be a member of the team. Your clarity when presenting the job position will help you and those you interview. You will have an easier time deciding who has the qualities in order to be successful on the job and allows the potential employees to decide if they can fulfill the job duties. Having a new employee manual that carefully lays out these parameters can be very helpful.

    SAFETY AND QUALITY

Whether you’re able to bring in an experienced technician to your team, or someone with little to no experience, both options have their pros and cons. Either way, I believe it’s imperative you express that safety and quality are among some of the top ingredients with all current and future employees. This will set a great baseline for your company’s brand. No matter which option you go with it’s also recommended you do as much of a background check as possible. Properly vetting any incoming employees will help weed out the candidates who don’t fit with your company’s core values.

    EXPERIENCED CANDIDATES

Experienced window cleaners can be very beneficial as they typically require less supervision and tutelage which usually translates to a quicker turnaround into that employee netting the company a great return. However, sometimes experienced window cleaners can come with some certain unwanted window cleaning habits/techniques that wasn’t uncovered in the interview process. I am a firm believer that most people deserve second chances, so as long as you feel you have given them every opportunity to be a productive employee, hopefully they will become what you expected them to be to help the business to continue to grow. If not, it may be best to cut ties and move on to the next best candidate.

    UNEXPERIENCED CANDIDATES

If you are hiring an individual with no experience, you will need to be patient with their maturation process. I have found that inexperienced window cleaners often tend to be self-conscious about their speed when paired up with technicians who have years in the field. You will need to remain patient and encourage them that safety, technique, and quality of their work is most important in the training process. Speed will come with time. One of the great benefits of someone with little to no experience is you will be able to mold them to exactly what you want that best fits with your company’s goals. Plus, you won’t have to spend a considerable amount of time breaking them of their old bad habits.

    TOOLS FOR NEW EMPLOYEES

One tool we recommend for new unexperienced employees is the Moerman Drywalker Flex Modular Bucket on a Belt System. The Moerman Drywalker Flex is a unique, modular bucket on a belt system, meaning it has multiple pieces you can take apart and put together in the way that works best for you. It is designed to keep your tools close at hand in a configuration that works best for you. Made with abrasion resistant, waterproof, lightweight materials, it’s designed to be adaptable and maneuverable. Bending and kneeling aren’t an issue, you can move with the Drywalker without fear of spilling water down your leg or the BOAB banging against your leg. One feature of the belt that stands out in the drip catcher. It catches water to keep your leg dry and functions as the base of the modular Drywalker system. It is transparent, so you can visually check the level of water and has a baffle to keep water from sloshing back out. These features prevent spills from new employees.

Also, it is great to have your new employee set up with all the tools they may need, shop all kits on our website. Window cleaning kits provide a tremendous value to either start window cleaning or to easily add additional employees. They are professional-grade window cleaning tools, products, and supplies to clean more windows in less time. Many business owners prevent scratches by not allowing new employees to use scrapers on windows, they need to be used with caution and expertise.
